Happy Birthday Dad!
Today is my dad's birthday - he is somewhere on the road, (he just left Tawny's last night) and I'm not sure when he's finishing this trip. I only know that he will be home by no later than Tuesday, in time for my wedding.
My relationship with my father has been a tumultuous one over the years. As a young child it was really good - dad did a number of fun things with us (I was reminded of a few forgotten things Tawny has listed over at Locobellatuna). I remember he used to take us to the field and fly this kite we had with us... It was yellow with two bright white eyes and a long red tail. Kites usually come with a certain amount of string and a small little plastic handle... not ours. Ours had to have the handle of a broomstick because Dad had added so much extra string that a little plastic handle could never have supported it. Our kite used to fly so much higher than anyone else's - it was just a speck sometimes. Dad often used to have to help me and my sister hold it as it was hard to control with the kite being so high.
When my teenage years hit, it became very rocky between my father and I. Sometimes he had some ridiculous ideas that I just couldn't conform to, but I would say a lot of it was that we both had the same stubborn will to never give in. And boy could we shout. My poor mother hated this and finally, after years of it, she finally asked me to start agreeing with him just for the sake of peace. So at the ripe old age of 19 I did. I must say though, thru all this he diligently helped with my maths as well, how he had the patience with that, I'll never comprehend.
In my early 20's my dad and I got on reasonably well, however there were a few hurts here and there, even a few requests on his behalf for me to move out. Me being the stubborn girl I was, of course I didn't - I told him I'd stay home as long as I could just to annoy him! (I think 30 was punishment enough!!!)
Once I passed my mid-twenties and had established myself with a half-decent career and most of my siblings were gone, Dad and I actually began to talk to each other a lot more. We seemed to get along pretty well and I enjoyed our much easier relationship. There had been a time in the past when I would groan upon pulling into the driveway to see his van parked there as I never knew what his mood would be...
Although my dad can be difficult, stubborn, self-absorbed, grouchy, etc. he can also be very loving and level headed and sometimes, believe it or not, pretty cool. I remember one time he came to me and asked 'Is that your bottle of wine hidden in the cold room' 'No', was my honest reply, and with a giggle 'I think its Sandra's'. His pretty calm response 'Well you'd better to tell her to hide it somewhere else before your mother finds it'. Not what I had been expecting.
I remember when Tawny moved to BC - we all stood at the airport clinging to her - I was a bit in awe to see my dad crying so much, right along witht the rest of us - it was very touching. When I left for my first (but unsuccessful) move to the UK last August I knew dad was sad but he left the departures lounge to go sit in the car... maybe he didn't want another scene like when Tawny left... I thought for a brief moment that maybe he didn't feel as close to me. Either way I was a bit relieved as its not easy to see your father cry. The next day while I was sitting in Gatwick Lock up wondering what was to be my fate, I was summoned to the phone. I picked it up to hear my dad's voice. As soon as he heard my voice telling him I was ok, he started crying. My big, strong dad was heartbroken. When I got home that night on the plane I could see the emotional turmoil both my parents had been thru...
My next journey to the UK in December was uneventful and I reached Andy's side with no problems. We were sitting in the Coffee Shop and I was trying to sort out my emotions and get myself together enough to call home. I knew both of my parents would be worried until they had heard from me, and Dad had told me he'd be up to go to work, but I thought I would wait until at least six a.m. There was no need to -Andy's cell phone rang and it was my Dad... he choked out on a sob that he couldn't wait, he had to know I was ok. He then said that he was so relieved to know that I was there with Andy and how happy he was for us. Needless to say I couldn't talk myself thru the tears.
Throughout my teenage years and into my early twenties I used to wonder about the depth of my father's emotions... I wonder no more. Although he doesn't show his feelings often, they are well and truly there.
Next week I will be getting married to Andy. My dad has told me that he wants to walk with me down that isle. I don't know why I was a little surprised at first (maybe I thought he wouldn't' want to be in the spotlight) but he is my dad afterall, so why wouldn't he want to?
My father is a good man and I love him, especially on this very special day.

Time Grows Even Shorter
Well - Four days until we leave for Toronto! On Monday next we will be in Halifax and will be down to the last five days before the wedding. I have pretty much sorted out what needs to be sorted, save for the music thing. I think the wedding music itself will be pretty modern. As for the party - well that's up to the DJ and what the guests request. I just hope there is a good mix. I'm leaning more towards not having a so-called 'first song/dance' as I don't really want to dance in front of everyone to a slow song, I was hoping more for something upbeat that everyone could join in with, however Andy is now saying he won't 'dance', not to fast music anyway... so perhaps the best thing to do is just get the party going with some upbeat music!
Trading Spaces Versus Changing Rooms
I was never what you'd call a big fan of Trading Spaces while at home. Every now and then I would watch a show, but usually just grew impatient to see the end result and what the neighbours would think of their new space. Although sometimes the designers had neat ideas, sometimes they were just plain awful. One thing I have noticed with watching the UK Version - Changing Rooms, is that the people changing rooms don't let the designers get away with as much as they do in the US Version. I was watching it this morning and found myself feeling bad for the designer, something I rarely found myself doing with the US version. These two women were just knocking everything the designer was coming up with, and her ideas weren't actually too bad. But I guess the people next door know the person who's room they are re-decorating much better... I vote for Changing Rooms.
PS - I like the host of Changing Rooms much better as well.

I fear I'm addicted...
Stacy sent me a link to a new Games site after I had requested the Tetris link... turns out its got Pacman on it and I seem to spend a lot of time playing it. I find myself trying to score as many points as I can and thus win an extra pacman before moving on to the next level and often end up frustrated, thus going back for more. Addicted I tell you! I don't understand why today's kids need all these violent and abusive games... not when there is Pacman! It takes me back to such a long time ago... God what was it we even played this game on beside the one in the arcade? Atari??? While looking for pacman icons I came across one with teeth and what does it make me think of - PacMan Cereal - that was good stuff too - I don't suppose they still sell it?
A Weekend of Birthdays
Today Alex is 12 and we are lucky enough to have him this weekend. We celebrated at Pizza Hut and he is now happily upstairs playing the games we bought for him on the PS2... Connor is with him and you'd barely know they were here. We plan to make the most of this last weekend with them before we head out to Canada. Tomorrow we pick Tasha up around noon before heading over to Andy's mom's for Claire's birthday party (Andy's sister). We are having cake for both Claire and Alex. Tomorrow night Andy and I are off to the Mill House for our friend Paul's birthday. I like the Mill House and am so looking forward to enjoying a delicious meal - I've been saving up all week, tonight I only had a salad bar at Pizza Hut!
Since I haven't Meme'd In Awhile...
The Weigh it Is
How would you describe your everyday clothing style? Since I'm not working, relaxed and comfortable - jeans and tee's.
What is your favorite piece of clothing? My black Ralph Lauren 3/4 length Tee and my pink polka dot boy shorts & matching tank from Victoria's Secret.
What type of clothing do you avoid the most? Why? Clothes that reveal my stomach and tops that you can't wear a bra with - these reasons are probably self-explanatory.
Does your weight influence the way you shop? Sadly my weight influences almost everything in my life, but definitely how I shop - I don't have the sort of figure that can get away with wearing anything.

A New Week
Well things have quieted down and are pretty much getting back to normal. I'm a little dissapointed with the level I let my stress take me to, especially since I've ended up with an outbreak of stress rash on my shoulders that will take a week or two to calm down - yeah, just what you want before your wedding. I have however been to the Doctor and all is going to be ok.
In reading over what I had wrote on Monday, I must say, boy did I sound down and out. And I was for a couple of hours. But everything has been sorted out and the kids are happier. Although Andy is starting to realize that Tasha was better off going home, I think he still misses her, which is understandable. I will say at this point that after reviewing what I had written about not being heard didn't really come across right. The only times I actually get told they are his children to worry about is when I'm letting it get me really stressed or if there is something I really disagree with in regard to punishment. I know that these comments are made a)to try and help and b) because each person believes in different ways to sort out disobidient kids. These comments have never come from Andy - they come from our mothers. Andy and I usually talk things out and he often takes my advice because, well let's face it - it makes sense ;)
Anyway... for now things are back to normal. We saw all three kids last night and they are fine.
Time Grows Short
Well - just over a week before we board that plane that will bring us back to Nova Scotia. Just over two weeks before Andy and I become Husband and Wife in front of all those we love!!!! I do believe that I am finally beginning to get excited! I'm pretty calm about most things because no matter what happens (or doesn't) we will be surrounded by loving friends and family and so long as we are able to get married, eat some fine food and have a good party, that is all that matters. The RSVP list is firming up and it looks like the numbers will be 75-80, which is lovely number.
I'm really excited to see so many people again, all those who I saw while I was back home in the summer, those relatives that are coming from far away, and of course Cat and her man who are flying in from Colorado! Its been a year too long since she and I last saw each other!
I was also thrilled to get the fantastic news yesterday that my dear friends Jeff and Jaime Brown are expecting their first baby!!! Whooo-hoo! I can't imagine a better set of parents-to-be! It was great to get some happy news this week!
So... I have a few busy days ahead of me with trying to sort and pack. I've been managing my weight and think I'm actually going to try and get my ass out for a run, something I have not done in a LONG time...

Happy Birthday Tuna!
Today is my sister Tawny's birthday - she turns 29 - one more year to enjoy the roaring 20's. I know she will be treating herself to all the treats that she deserves on this day - that is not to mention all the treats she will be getting from her husband and friends. I know that one very special birthday gift arrived at Pearson Airport today - Dawn. I hope they have a fantastic time at the Toronto Film Festival this week - how I envy them their fun!!!

I Gotta Get A Helmet
I just got back from an hour long bike ride and let's just say, well I'm worn out. I didn't really know what the plan was when I set out, I just knew that it was a sunny day and I needed some exercise. I ended up traveling thru little villages, only one really familiar, thus ending up, well a little lost - but only momentarily. After looping around a village called Tetney twice I sorted myself out and got back on track. The only trouble with the whole route was that I found myself on a little track of highway. Although the highway has a cycle lane, it didn't give me comfort knowing I had no helmet on my head. I'm sorry, but I can't be like 75% of the British population and not wear one.
Am I Coming or Going?
Last Friday I happily picked Carol Anne up to head out shopping for the rest of my wedding shower loot. As we made the turn from her street onto one of the queiter main ones we were chatting cheefully, so much so that while we were sat at a set of lights Carol Anne calmly breaks her line of speech and says 'Jode, your on the wrong side of the road!' OOOPS. We had a laugh and I corrected myself. That was my first blooper since coming back into the country. My second blooper? Monday morning I scraped the white paint off a post and on to our car while exiting the rather small driveway belonging to the physiotherapist (he works out of his house.) Now I'd made the exit no problem the week before, and this one was straight out, but I still goofed. I'm not used to marking up my car - I'm a pretty damn good driver, especially over here (despite what Mrs. McLaughlin thinks ;)- I'm almost over-cautious and I certainly stick to the speedlimits, which is a big change for me, its just getting used to such SMALL spaces over here - its enough to drive me nuts.
Weddings R Expensive & A Slight Pain in the Ass
Well - its one day less a month until Andy and I exchange our vows in front of our closest friends and family. Some ask me if I'm nervous. My reply - no, not really. I'm trying to look at it as a celebration of love - not just between Andy and I, but of everyone - our families and friends. Although I know this day will be special I'm having a hard time trying to get things sorted out. Hard to believe I'm sure, as this as I have a wedding coordinator, however there are still monetary issues to sort out, a few decisions to be made re music, flowers etc. which I'm having an extremely hard time with. Also I'm trying to firm up the response lists and food choices, soemthing that needs to be done by the end of this week, especially since Tawny is going to be AWOL over the next few weeks (she's happily going to be at the Toronto Film Festival with Tay and Dawn - lucky bitches). On top of all this Andy had made the suggestion that he'd like us to do our own vows. As lovely as that sounds, I don't think that's going to happen. I get stressed over the ordinary stuff, how the hell would I be able to come up with something that explains how my heart feels as well as sound unique? Very doubful but I suppose we'll see what happens...

Yesterday I took the boys back at 4:00 - last night we really noticed their absence - I kinda got used to having the them around. However it was nice to have some time alone with Andy last night. After eating our supper of stirfry, we went for an hour long bike ride, which we really enjoyed. Down on the riverfront a fellow was windsurfing with a large kite - I'd never seen that before. After we got back from bike riding we just relaxed before retiring for the night.
This morning I was up and out by 9:00 a.m. to take Wendy to physio and then we shopped and had lunch (I had a tomato/lettuce and bean salad with fruit salad for dessert - I'm trying extra hard this week with the old weight thing). I almost have to try and keep up with Wendy now, as her legs are working so well! Nothing much else going on except I met another one of my neighbours and she seemed very pleasant, something I'm grateful for as I'm so used to hearing about Tawny's odd neighbours.
Another delightful event occured while I was shopping with Wendy - while passing the bookstore, Ottakers I saw that Maeve Binchy has a new publication out that I have not yet read 'Nights of Rain and Stars'. That will certainly be in my shopping cart in the near future. Speaking of Maeve, I'm totally engrossed in a book now called The Lacey's of Liverpool by Maureen Lee. The only reason I picked it up was that it was on sale for £1 at £ Stretchers. It accompanied me all the way to Canada and back before I decided to start reading it - I now can't put it down. Its very much in the style of Ms. Binchy and I'll definitely be looking for more books by this author.
Mmmmmm... Burgers
I was very excited to purchase a burger pattie maker yesterday and today I happily made extra lean burgers that I too can cook and enjoy on our new BBQ!!! I can't believe how revved up I get over these little things, but boy was I looking forward to trying it out, I'm even more so anticipating the taste of the burgers! (The only thing that would make them better is if Tay would give me his secret receipe!!!!)
I bought the pattie maker at my favorite shop in Cleethorpes, a little boutique called La Cocina Cookshop. The women who owns it is a real sweetheart - she certainly has come to know me. Carol-Anne wants me to take her back there tomorrow, something I won't have a problem with as I still have some shower money to spend!!!
Saturday, August 28, 2004
I arrived back in the UK at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday. It only took five hours and was quite uneventful. Andy of course, was there waiting for me at Glasgow Airport. He too had been up all night as it was a five hour trip up to get me.
We hung around the airport for about half an hour while Andy got a bit of rest and then off we went into the highlands of Scotland. We visited a town called Oban first. It was beautiful and historic and very, very Scottish. We ended up climbing the local mountain to the town's historic ruin - it was a good one to start off with, and besides, it was only about 8:30 in the morning. Funnily enough, we were halfway up the stairs when we heard laughter and believe this, smelt beer. Yup - right at the top in typical Scottish fashion were a bunch of young men drinking lager. I would assume they were still out from the night before, but I could be wrong.

Halfway Up Ben Nevis
Around noon the jet lag hit me and I just couldn't keep my eyes open. Andy pulled over to a lay-by in the road so we could get some rest. (Unfortunately check-in at our B&B wasn't until 2:00. When we finally did check in we spent most of the afternoon in bed. We got up around 6:30 and went in hunt of a nice fish dinner at the restaurant we had spotted in town, however they were full up. We ended up back at the Inn where I ended up ordering Sea Bass. It was scrumptious, however I couldn't eat it until I had covered its face up with lettuce. Next time I see 'Whole' on the menu board I'll know what that means!!!

Isn't it breathtaking?
The next day found us traveling even higher into the mountains. We stopped at Ben Nevis (the highest peak in the UK) and took a cable car half way up and then proceeded to walk to the next peak where there happened to be a couple of bagpipers -how fantastic!!!

A little hike around Glen Coe
Of course once we came down off the mountain we went even higher, up to Glen Coe, as I needed to see this place that is so well known for the Clan MacDonald Massacre (remember my blog back in June???). It was absolutely my favorite place during the trip. We didn't stay too long, just hiked around some of the lower peaks to take a few pictures - we are definitely going back there for some proper hiking.

A break at the top....
So, Monday morning we ended up picking up the boys with no problems and we've been having a fantastic week. We don't bring them back until Wednesday evening at four. We spent all Monday evening and most of Tuesday out on our bikes (what a workout!) and then took off for Nottingham early Wednesday morning to pick up Andy's sister Alison before hitting the UK's Theme Park, Alton Towers. It was a good day out despite the fact that it rained the whole day. Some of the rides there are pretty exciting, however I only got to go on two really crazy ones as A) noone wanted to go on the ones that took you upside down, and b) the line ups were horrible! We waited over an hour to ride on one that is very similar to Top Gun in Toronto!!! I guess I'll have to wait until Stacy's around for the scarier rides!
The next day we headed off to the Peak District with the boys and ended up doing a three hour hike through, get this - even more mountains! Let me say, we were well and ready to get some serious sleep on Thursday nite!
On Friday I ended up taking it easy and just catching up on some housework. Tonite the boys' cousin, Jake, will be joining us for a movie in Lincoln and staying with us for the next two nights. I believe I have another couple of busy days in store!
Oh - we just bought our brand new BBQ today! Guess what we are having for supper tonight???

Since it has been so very long since I really blogged, and I have so much to talk about, I will try to condense things a bit. I may not blog about everything I would like to, because I'm sure that after so long, some of it may be quite un-interesting.
The Surprise Un-Shower
On Thursday the 12th I was due to go to Kristin's (my former boss) for supper with her and her family. When I pulled up outside of the house I noticed that there were a few cars around and that the drive way was empty. This usually spells party at Kristin's and for a moment I thought maybe she had invited a few people over from work. After quickly scanning the cars for any I recognized, mainly Marina's and Darla's, and not seeing any, I figured that someone else on the street must be having people over.
Karl and Teddy were in the front window watching as I pulled in the drive and exited the car. Kristin came happily out of the house and hugged me, before ushering me straight thru into the kitchen. At this point I had noticed a few familiar pairs of shoes and pop and drinks set up on the kitchen table. Kristin steered me toward the patio door and opened it... there waiting to surprise me were my mom and Stacy, a couple of very close friends, all of my aunties minus 2 and a bunch of girls from work. I was absolutely stunned - I stopped in my tracks, went behind the door jamb and proceeded to cry. Not tears of anger (as some might have suspected), but because I was so overwhelmed.
Not the most flattering shot but I think you get the gist of it
After I was finally coaxed out onto the patio, the evening was spent chatting with as many people as I could (hopefully I didn't leave anyone out) and then eating the delicious food everyone had prepared. My mom had even stopped at May Garden for my favorite eggrolls! That wasn't it, after dessert I was ushered into the family room where I was again surprised. This time with a beautiful white tree with lights and ribbons. This was covered in money and cards - what is known as a 'Money Tree' a shower gift that is perfect for a girl who lives 4000 miles away and could not ship gifts.
I then proceeded to unwrap the money and read the cards... I cannot believe how much money Andy and I have as a result of this one little party. A few people who couldn't be there even sent cards.
I had told my mom and Stacy upon arrival in Nova Scotia that I did not want nor need a shower, including a money one, and especially a surprise one. Although I did not want this, now that it has been done and I see how much it meant to those who care about me, I am very grateful. The money was great, but the thoughtfulness and caring meant even more.
Andy and I have decided to use the money on a BBQ, Blender/Smoothie Maker and a Chair (from IKEA). Any left over will be used for small household items!
Mercy River
On Friday morning after the un-shower, Dawn, Stacy and I picked up my young friend Tasha and headed up to Mercy River. We chose to forgo the TeePee's this time in lieu of a cabin. It was a good choice, however that night was so hot and humid, sleeping was difficult. Add to the fact that Stacy had hidden under Dawn's bed while she was in the bathroom, only to grab her foot while she was changing - something that scared the hell out of her and seemed to set the rest of us in spook mode for the remainder of the night.
The kayaking and canoeing were absolutely fantastic as usual. We spent the whole afternoon on the lakes and river, the majority of it to the ringing tune of 'JOOOODDDYYY' or Joooddddyyyy I'm stuck, come GEEEETTTT me... I don't LIIIKKKE this' as Stacy got herself stuck on numerous rocks. Dawn being Dawn just kept on paddling and left me to assist my sad little sister.

Dawn & Stacy
Saturday we woke up with full intentions of hitting the river again, however as it was pouring down rain we made our way slowly back the coastal roads, stopping again in Bridgewater for our lunch. I can't believe the amount of time I have spent in that place this summer. Funnily enough I had only been there once before this year!
The Rest of the Week
I spent the last of my vacation home catching up with friends and family I had not yet seen and hanging out with Stacy. We only managed to catch one more movie and sadly I had to leave on the day Open Water came out, however its due to be released here on September 9th, so that's ok.
I went in to have lunch with Darla and Kristin on the Wednesday and went with the residents of SVGH to the Public Gardens in the afternoon. It was really nice to catch up with a few of the girls - Colleen, Kathy and Debbie T, and it was especially sweet to see the residents happily eating their strawberry ice-cream that was melting more quickly than they were able to eat it! Like children, they didn't seem to care that they were wearing most of it, which is the way it should be on a hot, sticky day!
One Last Night In Halifax
So... My Aunt Nita flew into town from Saint John's on Thursday afternoon to have a night out with me before I left Friday (she was originally due to fly in on Friday). Mom, Stacy, my Aunts' Marg and Shirley met up with us, as did my cousin's Tracy and Wayne (it was Wayne's b-day), my Uncle Reg and Tim and Roisin. Things started off peacefully enough with a meal at the Ale House. We then moved on to the Old Triangle where things were pretty quiet, until a few of us went up to the Snug and started goofing around. We then left there and headed up to Pogue Fado's as my Aunt Nita's daughter Tina was supposed to be there that night. At this point, Ra, Tim, Uncle Reg, Aunt Shirley and Wayne left us.

Snug in the 'Snug'
Pogue's was fantastic, a great band from NB was playing and the drinks were flowing. Next thing you know Tracy and I were on the dance floor shaking it up with a bunch of people we'd never met. Next thing you know, we were over at the bar doing shooters (or at least I was with the guy and girl I had met on the dance floor). You just gotta love Halifax for meeting up with people. I honestly think I invited them to the wedding! Crazy I know, since half the people I wanted to invite I couldn't due to space! Anyway, long story short, I got extra loaded and ended up being more hungover than I have been in AGES... thus ruining my Friday plans to have a yummy NS lunch and to shop for the few food items I'd wanted to bring back to the UK. Owell I had fun and I can get the foodstuff in less than six weeks!
Well there you have it.... the remainder of my trip home in much long drawn out detail. Tomorrow Andy and I are taking the boys to the UK's theme park with his sister and spending the night in Nottingham. I will try and catch up with the rest of my blog no later than Friday.
Sorry if the blog was too lengthy this time!

I can't believe how long its been since my last post, yet I have so many things to write about, and surprisingly I have even received a few emails as to when I might be blogging next. That, I must say, is a great feeling.
My time here, especially these last two weeks has gone very quickly. When I get back to England I will have a lot going on, but I'm hopeful that I will be able to sit down and blog about my experiences to date. They are as follows:
The (Non-Shower)and Gorgeous Money Tree
Mercy River
Hanging out with Cousins and the 'Wedding Video' - not mine
The Dress (Again)
(oh and a few movies again)
Saint Vincent's and my friends there
Events Yet to Happen (i.e. next few days)
Pubbing with Mom, Stacy, My Aunties and Friends
The Highlands of Scotland with my 'cough' fiance
Getting home and picking the boys up on Monday morning (fingers crossed).
So... I have so many things to talk about that have already happened and so much is going to happen this coming weekend/week that I will have a hugely long blog. I also don't have any photos yet, and of course will want to publish those (that will be dependent on Dawn of course!)
So, thanks to all of you who read my blog regularly - your support is amazing. Hopefully when I do get around to proper blogging, I'll get a few more comments ;)(that's a wink btw).

I have seen a number of movies in the past two weeks or so. Some at the cinema, some here at home. Most Recently:
Little Black Book I went to this movie not expecting much but a couple of light laughs, however I came out of it with a different opinion. After the first 10 minutes or so, I really got into it. For some unknown reason I have tried not to like Brittany Murphy but alas, she has won me over. It was more than just a light comedy, as it had a good little twist. Holly Hunter addeded a little vim to the movie, and as well, there is a very surprising cameo at the end.
Collateral Again, I wasn't expecting too much, and although I guessed the ending, it was still interesting enough to keep my attention with its sense of dry humour. I was surprisingly pleased to see Mark Ruffalo as one of the main characters.
The Village Although most people are trashing this film I have to say, they don't know a good movie if it hit them in the face. I loved it. I guess if your looking for a gory horror flick your not looking in the right place. I think this movie was frightening and suspensful at times - it also made a valid point about the world we live in today.
Boat Trip: I was dissapointed to see Cuba Gooding Jr. in such a silly role - I found the movie to be crass and stupid for the most part, however there were a few scenes that got a chuckle out of me.
13 Going On 30 I loved it! It was light, cute and touchingly funny.
The Big Bounce : Despite having Owen Wilson and Morgan Freeman as key players, I found it boring. Bottom line: A waste of time.
Another This and That
1. How do you like your eggs? Omlette style or scrambled (and sometimes sunny side up, but then I only dip my toast in the yolk - I hate the whites).
2. What do you collect? Nothing really, besides the normal junk most people seem to gather without meaning to.
3. Do you carry a purse, backpack or briefcase on a regular basis? If yes, does it contain only the essentials or a whole lot of everything? Sometimes I carry a purse or bag, the only essentials being my wallet, cell phone and a lipstick - and if the bag's big enough, my book.
4. When is the last time you've read a book, put together a puzzle, built something or did something crafty? I feel empty and lost if I'm not reading a book. I read at least one a week. (Oh and I went and painted pottery on Friday).
5. What was the highlight of your weekend? Painting with Stacy on Friday afternoon and then having supper with her and Darla at Pogue Fado's while listening to an excellent guitarist called Keith Andrews play.

Less Than 2 Weeks to Go
Well I've been here four weeks and only have two to go... I still haven't accomplished everything I had wanted to do such as see some people I have been waiting to see, however within the next two weeks I will be making a concerted effort to do so. Some people have been calling to set up times with me and so far I just haven't managed it. This is my week to do so. Anyone else who hasn't really shown a whole lot of interest in hanging out, well maybe next summer. I'm not sweating the small stuff. When you only have so long at home, that's exactly it - you only have so much time. Next time I'm here it will likely only be for two weeks and most of that time will be taken up with family - mine and Andy's.
More On the Dress
So, Wednesday morning after trying to be good for a few days, and before it got overly hot and sticky I tried on the damned thing - it fit pretty much the same as it did when I bought it. I was hoping it would as I finally got around to taking it into the tailor's to have it 'altered' - by which I mean to say - have the enormously HUGE train taken off it - sorry but I ain't prentending to be anybody's Princess Di. So, Friday at lunch time Stacy and I went to Nick and Mike of Gottingen Street (these men were strongly recommended by a dear friend - thanks Valentina!) and I put the dress on for them to assess. Both men loved the color of it and exlaimed that they had never seen a dress like it before in the 40 years they have been in the business. Anyway, the dress was a little sticky at that hour, but was still ok. As at the beginning of July I still have a bit of work cut out for me. I never wanted to be a bride who had to lose a town of weight just for her wedding, and thankfully that is still the case. I think that is so icky - I want to lose weight of course, but on my own time. I don't need to be skinny for that day, I just need to still fit in the dress, which I will!
So, speaking of the wedding (again). Tawny informed me the other night she had set up a wedding blog for me. I was a little bit shocked as I had informed her and everyone else who reads my blog that I wouldn't be setting up a wedding blog as I really wouldn't have that much to say i.e. basically talking about all details leading up to including the occasion. (Although I'm very happy that Tawny did this for her own wedding!) As we all know I'm just not into it that much. However Tawny quickly assured me that this blog is just for her and I, to keep track of wedding info such as Guest Lists etc. Since she is in charge of a few things involving this event, it makes perfect sense. I love her for her organizational skills (amongst other things) and honestly couldn't do this without her! (Not that I'm doing much, except telling Tawn and my Planner what I want/don't want - jeez even Roisin informed the planner of what flowers I'd be wanting as I have no clue!)
One more wedding thing: I folded to conformity and bought a pair of proper shoes... I had told myself a month ago that if I found a suitable pair I would buy them, but wouldn't go out of my way - which is exactly what happened. Owell I'm happier to be able to wear the flops now... oh, and my cousin Denise very sweetly and kindly offered to make my wedding cake. I told her that as sweet as she was being in offering it, I really don't want one. We're having Apple Carmel Cake for dessert - that's enough. A wedding cake is just another excuse to pose for a picture, besides who really even eats it/sleeps with it under their pillow?.
Trucker John
My dad has been steadily making his way home after crossing the US in the swealtering heat. Only one day into his trip his AC went and he was left to travel the southern states into Texas thru the most unforgiving heat. My dad is a big man and finds the heat hard even when he's in the house here in NS, I can't imagine the hell he was in travelling and sleeping in a big rig in those conditions.
Thursday night he made it into Ontario and had a night with Tawny and Taylor and then I believe he hooked up with Sandra on Friday night. He's been travelling pretty much straight thru today and will probably be here in the early hours. It'll be good to see him - he deserves the break this week for sure!

Fuck
Tonight I figured I'd better try on that dress to see if I could still squeeze into it, as I'm due to go get it altered this week. Squeeze being the appropriate word. Basically, the dress isn't working at the moment. I could barely breath and to put it plainly, its now too small. It zipped up, but barely. So... I knew this would likely happen what with having most of the summer at home, however the over-eating has to stop. I'm sure the fact that I'm bloated and swollen from a drinking binge last night and the sweltering humidex of today isn't helping, however its time to seriously begin watching my food intake. When I bought the damn thing is just fit then, so I knew I was gonna have a battle. However as discussed with my sisters, I know once I get back to England I won't have a problem dropping some weight so I'm not gonna stress too much.
I did get some pretty plain flip flops to wear under it though, which makes me happy. I had bought a pair of proper shoes but they are the wrong color. Owell I didn't waste time moaning about that. I'm happy with the flops.
The friends I have in my life are truly the best.
As most of you know, I used to have a friend who put way too much on my shoulders and expected far too much from me. Sadly, because of all these expectations (some of which were very unreasonable) and the fact that I could never be the person she wanted me to be, we went our separate ways.
I think that I'm a pretty good person in terms of my friendships and I try and give what I get in return. A couple of times I have broken plans and the friends that I have are very understanding, especially since I'm home on vacation. Its nice to be able to tell your friend the truth, rather than make up a lie, and have her/him be accepting of it. Now there are times when breaking plans just isn't acceptable, but for the smaller stuff, most of my friends don't sweat it and besides, its not something I do very often.
Case in Point: I had originally made plans to go to the Fire Works Launch with Dawn and her family last night. I was however very much in the mood to head to the water front and the beer tents. There were some very good bands playing and as I've not really tore up the town yet, I really wanted to do partake in the downtown music scene in honor of the Tall Ships. Dawn wasn't up for it but very honestly told me it'd be fine with her if I bailed to go out. She's been working a lot of shifts lately and was tired anyway, and certainly not up for going out. But I was grateful that she is the sort of gal you can be yourself with. If for a moment she had expressed dismay though, I would have kept to the original plan.
So... Darla and Glen (another two very laid back pals) had called to say they were heading downtown for a walkabout and invited me along. Of course the walkabout turned into one hell of a big drunkfest (as we knew it would), but hell it was good clean fun. We were walking around looking for the Celtic Tent so we could see McGinty and we were about to give up when we were pretty sure we heard them. We were behind the tent in the area surrounded by the loading trucks. There was a partition in the tent that Glen stuck his head in, and yup, it was McGinty. Instead of walking around to the front, we just creeped in the back way... and saved ourselves five bucks. After awhile I needed to pee and walked over to the side entrance (not the main). I sweetly asked the bouncer if it'd be alright to leave to go to the bathroom. He sternly informed me I needed a stamp (that I should have got upon entering). I smiled and told him that I was dying to go to the toilet and would it be ok if I just came back in his way. It worked of course. A bit later D&G had to go to the toilet and walked out the same way. A few minutes later I saw them approaching the tent and went and ordered another round. I stood waiting with the 3 beers in my hand but they were walking away from the gate. I watched them walk to the main gate, but again, walk away. A few minutes later the monkeys came waltzing thru the back cover. They were told they had to pay five bucks to get back in! Its good we had our alternate entrance! However I'm sure I could have used my wiley charms to get them in! God its good to know I've still got it!
After we left the tent we moved on to the Old Triangle where Glen and I happily downed a lot of Ceasars with Spicy Beans... yummy.
I was feeling the pain today though....
Airlines...
I was wondering why Andy had called this morning at the appointed time, however when I finally roused myself to check my cellphone, it was again not working properly. (I will be addressing this when I get back to the UK). I finally got to talk to Andy around noon to see how he had made out on his return trip from New York. He'd arrived ok, only to find out that his luggage hadn't! The airlines, after locating it, then delivered it to the wrong home... Andy was supposed to have it back by nine this evening. The check in people at New York had made them remove their locks so hopefully it will be undisturbed - he had a lot of presents in that luggage!
So, speaking of airlines, I booked my flight back to the UK for August 20th. I happily upgraded myself to premium for only a few extra dollars so now I won't have to worry so much about my luggage allowance. I'm flying into Glasgow and once there Andy and I will travel up into the highlands for the weekend. I'm looking forward to this getaway with him as it will be a good way to spend our first night together before picking the boys up that Monday (if all works out the way we hope). I really miss him and am looking forward to seeing him again. The only dissapointing factor was that I had assumed I'd be flying back via Toronto, and therefore get to spend a few days there, however the cheapest flight was direct. Owell at least I know I will be seeing my sisters and Taylor in October.

After sitting around for awhile in the sun this afternoon, Mom came to the decision that she didn't really want to go to the reception either. So, instead we had cool showers and made our way to May Garden where we proceeded to stuff our faces.
We stopped at home to drop off the leftovers (not that I had much, just some rice mom eagerly scraped onto her plate, lol) and perhaps head to bingo for the night (I'd actually prefer that over the wedding of virtual strangers) however Stacy called and reported that she could get off work early if we wanted to do something, so I said 'Come on home!' Its been a nice evening with my mom and hopefully when Stacy gets here we will all find something to do together! Yeah!!!

Yesterday two of my closest friends each lost a beloved pet. Channel was a 15 1/2 year old dog who belonged to the Browns. She was a lovely dog and they were so fortunate to have her for so long. I remember when she was still a puppy.
The McLaughlan's have just lost their 20 year old Cat Peanut. Peanut was so much a part of the family that Dawn blogged about him frequently.
Both of these friends (and their families)will miss their pets, but I have to say, they were very, very fortunate to have them for so long. Cats don't often live past 15 and dogs rarely live past 12. I've been expecting to hear the news of their passing since I moved away. What's hard to believe is that they both died on the same day, and while I am home.
News from the big
Andy has been in New York with his Dad and a few work mates since Thursday night. We have been in constant contact and I was actually speaking to him while he was at the top of the Empire State Building. He has been sight-seeing almost non-stop and is complaining of sore feet, however I know that he is enjoying this much deserved, albeit short break. This morning he called me from Victoria's Secret as I had asked him to pick up a couple of items in the VS Body Lotion Line, but something tells me I'll be getting a few more items!!!
We are however, both feeling the strangeness of him being so close to Nova Scotia yet still so far away. I know that once our wedding is over and done with he and I are going to have a much needed break away together.
Another Wedding
The last thing I really wanted to do on a hot July Saturday is spend the evening at a long drawn out wedding reception. However as my Mom would like to go, and as I want to spend time with my mother, I will accompany her to the reception of a gal who used to work at Nubody's. I have a pretty good idea that the speeches will be long and boring, especially since I don't really know this girl or any of her family, however Rena and her mom will be there too so hopefully that will break up some of the monotony. Also, I want to go downtown this evening for awhile and Rena and I have tentative plans to do so. Its not exactly what I was hoping for, I was more interested in supper and a few drinks on a patio, but we will see what happens.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow evening though, as Dawn, Sheila and I will be keeping Gary company during the fireworks display. I'm not normally into the fireworks, but considering Gary will be working them from inside the hill, why not???? It should be fun.

Yesterday two very sweet things happened that reminded me of the good things in this world.
The First:
As Annette and I were walking into Walmart, a young man greeted us with the warmest, beautiful smile imaginable. "Good Afternoon Ladies" We smiled and responded in kind to this sweet man. "It's a beautiful day isn't it?" he beamed. I replied "It certainly is". Thus encouraged, "You ladies are looking especially lovely today". We smiled and I replied "Thank you - you're looking pretty good yourself!" With that and his smile somehow growing even larger, he continued on with his work pushing his carts back into place. Walmart should have more people like this on staff.
(I remember having a very similar conversation with this young fellow last year before leaving. I'm pleased to see that he still works there and hope with all my heart that more people than not are kind to him in return. I think its great that places like Walmart and Wendy's employ people with disabilities.)
The Second:
Last night I went to visit my cousins Wayne and Jen. Wayne wasn't yet home from work so I had the pleasure of assisting Jen with getting the twin boys ready for bed. I ended my evening sitting in a rocking chair with the sweetest little baby boy falling asleep cuddled in my arms. It just doesn't get any better than that.
Today's Agenda
Today I'm heading over to Ruth and Bruce's for a BBQ, something I'm really looking forward to. Since I've been home so many good people have been going out of their way to see and spend time with me that I'm sometimes a little overwhelmed. I'm not sure if it will be just the three of us or if the other people Ruth had mentioned inviting will be there or not, but either way, I'm looking forward to it.
Tonight I'm not sure what I will be doing. Dawn and her friend Deb (who is in town for tonight and tomorrow only) are heading downtown. I've not really been on a proper night out as of yet, however I'm not sure what I will be doing as A) my body is in bad shape from my workout yesterday, and b) I need to be fairly alert for my trip to Mercy River tomorrow. Although either of these reasons shouldn't stop me from enjoying myself out if I so choose. I will however see how I feel later on!

Basic Training and Brunch
This morning I dragged my butt out of bed at 8:15 to go to Basic Training at the all new Nubody's in Sackville. I was meeting Annette there, which is good thing or I have to honestly say, I'd never have made it. Once there though, I was pleased to see familiar faces, especially the instructor, Carolyn a gal I know from High School who just happens to be a kick-ass instructor. We hugged and chatted briefly before class began. I went in and set up my step beside Annette just as the music was starting. We weren't even 10 minutes into it before I stumbled and fell. Because I'm so smooth I managed to land on my ass on the step thus avoiding injury (at least to my body). At the moment I hear 'Welcome Back Jody' from Carolyn who with a grin, informs the class that I'm back from England for a visit and why I went there in the first place. Welcome back alright.........
After class Annette and I showered up and headed to Cora's for a lovely brunch. I thoroughly enjoyed some good old crispy Canadian bacon and an omelet. While we were eating who should walk in but Carolyn and her two lovely children and grumpy looking husband. Man, how such an attractive outgoing woman could end up with a cranky, old lump like that is beyond me. I wonder what she even saw in him way back in high school cause he wasn't anything special then either. Funny how life works out.
Most times, I believe it pays to wait for that special someone in your life to come along. At least when your in your 30's your can be pretty much certain of where your life is headed. But it is funny how some of us from high school got better over the years and some, well to put it plainly - didn't.
Something for Saturday
1. When did you first start to taste alcohol, as a child? teenager? etc... Hmmm... I used to have sips of beer out of my dads/uncles mugs before I was a teenager.
2. During your high school years, did you attend many parties? Describe what they were like. When one of your best friends is the queen of parties, your bound to attend a few. Most of Cat's parties involved everyone getting way to drunk and ended with the cops turning up.
3. Where do you like to go out for a drink? Describe the atmosphere, music, etc... Anywhere with a patio and good maritime band.
4. Has alcohol ever made you do something embarrassing? ME???? Nooooooo... not at all!
5. What is you favourite alcoholic beverage? Keith's Lite Beer & Bacardi Breezers. I love cider too, but it doesn't love me.

It's Quaint
Yesterday was my sweetheart's birthday, but as we spent the day down in Bridgewater at the Fairview Inn, I wasn't able to blog about the fact that he turned 38 yesterday. So Happy Birthday Andy!
So - yesterday morning Mom, Aunt Marg, Stacy, Roisin and I bundled into the van and headed off to see the Inn where Andy and I are getting married in October. When we first pulled into the parking lot I was having reservations. It didn't look to be what I expected. I think everyone was feeling the same.
After we walked around the front and into the lobby, we began to feel differently, especially after we met Melissa the Events Coordinator and took a tour of the place. It was built in the mid 1800's and has 24 rooms. These rooms are placed in a complete maze and are so cozy and unique it was hard not to fall in love with it. The thought that it will be full of my friends and family on the 9th of October makes it even sweeter.
After the tour we confirmed a few issues for the event such as the photographer and color scheme. The long and short of it is this - I'm going with the photographer she normally uses as his pictures are decent and the price is very right. The color scheme for our dining tables will be red and white, something I never ever would have thought to do, however as its October I think it'll be ok. And to put it frankly, red and white are the colors of both mine and Andy's country, so why not? The long and short of it is this - I'm not really that bothered over colors.
Oh, and I won't be discussing the wedding cake and what it looks like because there won't be one.
I'm just hoping the weather hold because I want the party and dancing to be held outside in the beautiful pool area. Everything about the place is so comfortable and cozy, including the bar room which opens onto the patio.
In my opinion its just the right place for Andy and I to begin our married life together.
You can find more pictures from the Inn here if you are interested.
Busy Days
The past few days have been hectic as I've been running around catching up with some people and doing the things I've been waiting to do. Wednesday I took a few of Tanya's kids and we went off to Queensland Beach for the afternoon. It was overcast but the waves were huge and despite there being loads of seaweed, I couldn't help but plunge myself into them! Annette and I had gone to Rainbow Haven on Sunday and as it was so foggy and chilly we never even tried.
I've seen a few movies over the past couple of days - The Clearing and Spiderman. Stacy and I were laughing during Spiderman as there was a child behind us doing exactly what kids do at the Theatre, something Tawny was quite vocal about on her blog this week, however he wasn't too bad and his dad did keep him pretty quiet.
I've been a bit worried about my weight since landing back in Canada, as I've been naturally eating out in pubs/restaurants a fair bit, not to mention movie theatre popcorn, something I missed dreadfully. I've been working out at the gym about every second day to try and stabilize my weight, however I must get back today as I haven't worked out since Monday. I suppose if I try and watch what I eat on alternate days and work out consistently I should hold my own. I can't really afford to gain anymore weight and once I get back to New Waltham I will have to make a concerted effort to get off whatever I put on here, plus more.
